1950s & 1960s Evening Dresses

Cinderella's Dresses 1960 Style or Bibbity Bobbity Boo!

Of course I knew I wouldn't be lucky, the first of three and the eldest, it never works out for the eldest. But that didn't mean I wasn't going to try my damndest anyway. The party was in full swing when I got there, the band was playing Blue Moon and there were lots of couples swaying on the dancefloor. As I walked down the stairs to the main ballroom I was aware of some disapproving glances from the matrons, much whisering behind hands. Who was this lone beauty? How dare I arrive alone? Well sorry, but with a family like mine you've got to take any chance you can. Suddenly I saw my stepmother, I can't believe she didn't recognize me. But she was too busy primping her daughters to take much notice of me. I turned quickly away and bumped into the most handsome person I've ever met. 'May I?' he said and we whirled away to Three Steps to Heaven. It will always be Our Song. The rest of the evening passed so quickly it all seems a blur, but soon it was a quarter to midnight and I had to leave, thats the trouble with being the eldest, responsibility gets you every time.

I knew I was looking good when every face turned towards me as I walked down the stairs. I shone, I shimmered. I felt flirtatious Soon I was surrounded by prospective partners, Captain Drummond of the Life Guards, Lord Horsham, Colonel Waring, who'd have thought the old dog would be so spry? And as for his small talk! I was so happy, I was a success, there was a queue of men waiting to dance with me. Then right in front of me was the Prince, 'Sorry, old man' he says to Captain Drummond 'This one's mine'. We danced and danced, had supper then danced some more. He is quite fascinating, we talked; or rather he talked and I listened. It always pays to let a man think he is interesting. Fortunately for me he was anyway, except about the prime-minister but no-ones perfect. I could see Capt Drummond casting wistful glances in my direction but I didn't care. I heard the clock strike quarter to but we were discussing the importance of the correct shoes with evening dress and I didn't pay much attention. Then suddenly I noticed it was five to midnight and I wrenched myself away, he seemed rather surprised. I noticed Captain Drummond smiling as I ran up the steps.

I must say I was quite nervous, it was make or break tonight, there's always so much expectation on the youngest. The Major-domo smiled and bowed as I entered the ballroom which made me feel better, I paused at the top of the stairs and saw the Prince approaching. He held out his hand and we danced off to The Night Has a Thousand Eyes (and they're all looking at me). It was magical. I felt on cloud nine as I whirled and swung through 50 songs each one better than the last. At supper we sat in a quiet corner but even so many people came up to talk to us though they left quite soon when they saw how uninterested we were. There was one man, a Captain of the Lifeguards I think, who looked quite upset. I hope I haven't offended him in any way. How good it was to be out alone, no-one to nag or outshine me. It made me quite courageous. All at once the clock started chiming midnight! I'm not sure how it happened, but fortunately we were near the french windows so I dashed out. After a moment the Prince started in pursuit, he shouted something but I didn't catch much of it, something like '...second time' I raced across the car-park and lost a shoe, most annoying they matched me so well. The chauffeur was looking quite worried when I arrived and we really burned rubber around the first corner.

Le Pouf (For Patou)

So sad to hear of the bankruptcy of Christian Lacroix, though not surprising. Having never made a profit in 22 years of trading it was inevitable that the house should fail in the current economic turmoil.

Fabulous Hunting Earrings & Brooch

Just seen these stunning ceramic earrings and brooch at my friend, Dex's, store on Ruby Lane. The Old Grey Mare so very very English. But where are they? Texas of course! Great to wear with a tweed suit and jumper. Or you could use the brooch as a scarf pin.

New Stock at Wickedlady Collectables

Some fantastic goodies this week at Wickedlady Collectables. First up is this fantastic Laura Ashley 1980s ballgown all in cotton. With boned bodice and polonaise full length skirt in a semi-tropical chintzy so-very-80s flower print. This sort of cotton dress from Laura Ashley replaced the past-glories of Horrockses who were wound-up in 1984 after getting lost in a polyester wilderness in the 1970s.

I thought when I first saw this cute 30s/40s hat that it would stay with me for a very long time, but fortunately for you it doesn't suit me at all. (sigh) Made by Selfridges of not-very-much-at-all-really. It features pale blue and purple anemones with dark blue veiling and dark blue velvet ribbon to wrap around your head this ends in 2 fake bows on top.

I KNEW that this Primrose semicloche wouldn't suit me but it suits Wanda. Made by Madame Marie of Sheffield. I seem to recall a family wedding photo with my gran wearing something very similar to this.

This is one of several 1950s and 1960s dress patterns I've uploaded this week and will probably feature in a fantasy wardrobe soon as I never have the occasion to wear evening gowns. But I've spotted some Rayne shoes on ebay which would go very well with this.

These are just a few highlights of the latest stock, I'm adding new stuff every day at the moment.

Late 1930s Rayne Court Shoes

This late 30s shape with rounded toe and 3 1/2-4 inch heel is my all-time favourite shoe style. The heel is more slender than the louis style which had gone before and the extra height makes the shoes more sophisticated. The styles were re-used in the late 1940s in England, after the limitations of the war, when the heels became evermore slender and small platforms peeptoes and anklestraps added variety.
This type of heel is soooooo much easier to walk in than stilettos even at 4+ inches.

This pair of late 30s glace kid courts have a grossgrain ribbon and bow on the front.
They are in an strange rosewood shade of pinkish brown.

The Silk Scarf: Art on a Budget

I've been out buying all week for my website, and am just now sitting back with a glass of wine to review all the great stuff I've bought. Fab 50s dresses, nylon undies, shoes ,stockings and heaps and heaps of silk scarves. In fact I've had a scarf frenzy. The fact that a scarf can add glam to any outfit on a budget was only
half the reason that I went so mad. The other half..? well they are works of art in their own right. (Oh and they keep you warm in our dodgy English summer weather.)

I've got a few uploaded already but more to come soon. Visit Wickedlady Collectables to see all the details. Enjoy!

Ascot and the Art of Wearing Hats

One of my biggest fashion bugbears is the general lack of 'nous' when it comes to wearing occasion hats. With Ascot just a couple of weeks away I am already starting to grit my teeth. Now, please don't think I am part of the fashion police, I'm as keen as anyone to try new styles. The main trouble, as I see it, is that women don't know what to do with their hair when wearing a hat so they don't do anything.

Hmmm, not so smart. So please, ladies if you're off to the races this summer don't just plonk it on your head. If you've spent £150 on a hat, please spend another £15 at the hairdressers. Take your hat along with you and your hairdresser will be able to suggest a suitable style.
(OK Rant Over)

Royal Ascot Dress Code

Royal Enclosure
A formal day dress with a hat or substantial fascinator is essential. Off the shoulder, halter neck, spaghetti straps and dresses with a strap of less than one inch and miniskirts are considered unsuitable. Midriffs must be covered and trouser suits must be full length and of matching material and colour.
Acceptable Dress & Hats at Ascot
Gentlemen are required to wear either black or grey morning dress, including a waistcoat, with a top hat. Hats may be removed within a restaurant, a private box, a private club or that facility’s terrace, balcony or garden. Also within any enclosed external seating area within the Royal Enclosure Garden. Overseas visitors are welcome to wear the formal national dress of their country or Service dress.

Grandstand
Ladies with a Grandstand Admission ticket are required to dress in a manner appropriate to a smart occasion. Many wear hats although this is not compulsory. Gentlemen in the Grandstand Admission area must wear a shirt and tie, preferably with a suit or jacket. Sports attire, jeans and shorts are strictly forbidden.
